The sculptural mask references the tsetse fly and is part of a collaborative research project exploring African technological consciousness. The work seeks to highlight the context-specific nature of technological innovation and to develop a portrait of the actors and forces shaping our understanding and use of technology. The image of the tsetse fly was inspired by Zimbabwean academic Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga’s book “The Mobile Workshop: The Tsetse Fly and African Knowledge Production".
